Tewksbury Edges Big Blue Field Hockey in Tournament Game

Tewksbury knocked in a goal in the latter part of the second half.

The Swampscott High field hockey team fought hard at home Friday against Tewksbury but came away on the short side of a 2-1 tournament game that ended their season.

Annie Kane scored Swampscott's goal.

With the score knotted 1-1, Big Blue pressured their opponent and dominated play for much of the second half. But they were unable to knock a ball by the Tewksbury goalie.

Swampscott Coach Toby Channen inspired her team from the sidelines with rousing calls urging them to fight on.

Swampscott goalie Katie Papele showed poise under pressure making a point-blank save with about 10 minutes to go in the game.

Several minutes later, Tewksbury slapped a short range shot that appeared to strike the post before sailing high into Swampscott's goal.

Tewksbury's goals were scored by Ashley Kelly and Hayley Sutherland.

It was a tough loss, especially for the seniors after the team's sparkling 12-win season and tournmanet win against Wayland earlier in the week, 1-0.

Coach Channen was heartened by the Swampscott girls' effort.

"No complaints," she said after the game. "No complaints."
