Swampscott Skins Tanners 45-39
A tremendous fourth quarter performance by Val Temin and Dan Trentsch led the Big Blue to a conference victory over Peabody.
Val Temin had three three-pointers in the fourth quarter, leading his team to a strong, defensive-minded 45-39 win over the Peabody Tanners on Tuesday night.
After ending the third quarter leading 31-30, the Big Blue began the fourth quarter on an 11-2 run that lasted over five minutes, thanks to Temin’s shooting and a John King layup. Although Peabody responded with a three of its own with 2:52 left which brought the Tanners within seven points, Dan Trentsch solidified the victory for Swampscott with three free throws in the final two minutes.

Temin and Trentsch both played with an incredible sense of urgency. While Temin racked up a myriad of boards down low, Trentsch was able to steal the ball on passes made on the perimeter. Both were able to finish strong on the offensive side, combining for a total of 25 points, with 13 from Trentsch and 12 from Temin.
Swampscott took control in the final eight minutes, but the Big Blue did not dominate in the first half. The Tanners began the game on a three-minute, 7-2 run, mainly thanks to senior Ben Martinez’s two layups. Peabody maintained a lead until Trentsch was fouled on a jumpshot behind the three-point line with 4:09 in the second quarter. Trentsch made all three free throws, giving Swampscott an 18-16 lead.

The Big Blue had a wild third quarter. After taking a 22-18 lead into halftime, their offense turned the ball over six times in the first 3:30 of the third quarter, allowing the Tanners to take a 25-22 lead with 5:10 remaining on a Maynard Wheeler three-pointer. Swampscott Captain Stephen Bowers immediately put an end to all of Peabody’s hopes by answering back with a three of his own with 4:08 left in the quarter. Baskets from Trentsch, Chad Nelson, and Temin gave the Big Blue a 31-30 at the conclusion of the quarter.
With its strong defensive play earlier in the game, the Big Blue did not allow Peabody to find its usual offensive rhythm. Coach Fucile’s 2-3 zone was executed to perfection by its players.
Bowers finished the game with eight points, while Nelson and John King both added five points.
Swampscott takes on Lynn Classical at home on Friday night at 7PM. The Rams are 7-5, and are coming off four consecutive wins against Salem, Lynn English, Marblehead, and Gloucester.
