Swampscott Resident Rejoining Patriots' Cheerleading Squad

Michelle Nigro, of Swampscott, will return to the New England Patriots' cheerleading squad this year.

A Swampscott resident will be cheering on the New England Patriots from the sidelines this season.

Michelle Nigro was chosen among a group of 28 residents from New England and elsewhere across the country for the 2014 New England Patriots Cheerleading squad.

The team itself comprises 11 rookies and 17 veteran cheerleaders, with hometowns representing four of New England's six states, as well as cheerleaders from New Jersey, Texas, Arizona and California.

About 320 interested cheerleaders applied for the squad, and the finalized list was chosen following a month-long audition that began with open auditions and culminated with the annual Patriots Cheerleading Boot Camp, which concluded on May 3.

The squad, which rehearses twice a week and performs at all home games, is populated with students and professionals, including a Harvard graduate and neuroscience PhD candidate, a business banking officer, a dentist and a culinary student.
