Swampscott Blue Ice Tied Up With U-10 Magicians
Two of the best teams in the U-10 softball league battled it out for seven full innings Wednesday night, and when darkness fell it was all even at 6-6.
The Swampscott Blue Ice softball team came into Marblehead Wednesday night with a perfect 10-0 record, they didn’t lose last night but the U-10 Magicians sure gave them something to think about.
Marblehead (8-2-1) tied the game up 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Elizabeth Myers came home on a sharp single to right field with two outs by Sammy Treff off Swampscott’s Emma Tomlins.
Both teams went down 1-2-3 in the seventh inning and the game ended in a 6-6 tie.

“That’s a very good team over there,” Marblehead manager Peter Ernst said. “They beat us (2-1) earlier in the season and the girls really wanted to win this one tonight.”
“Most of the girls are a little young to really understand the importance of a Marblehead-Swampscott game, but they wanted to win this one after losing a close one a few weeks ago,” Ernst said.

Swampscott broke out on top 1-0 in the first, but Sophie Vener and Treff scored in the bottom of the first to put the Magicians up by one after one.
Swampscott (10-0-1) surged ahead 5-2 before Maggie Devlin came home in the bottom of the third on groundout by Francis Paik, and it was 5-3, Swampscott after three full.
Marblehead came all the way back in the bottom of the fourth, knotting it up at 5-5, when Ali New raced home on a fielder’s choice and Maggie Devlin drove in Vener with her second run of the game.
Marblehead’s Mandy Dumais whiffed the side in the fifth, but gave up a run in the top of the sixth when Michaela Agresti scored on a single by Samantha Agresti. Dumais came right back and struck out Tory Adams to end the inning.
“The girls battled at the plate,” Ernst said. “I told them to be patient, but be aggressive, and take good swings.”
Myers singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, moved to second on a groundout by Vener and came home to tie it when Treff drove one into right off Blue Ice hurler Emma Tomlins.
The Magicians are right back action Thursday night in Ipswich, Monday night they travel to Beverly and the final game of the season is next Tuesday at home against Gloucester, behind Marblehead High School. All U-10 Magicians games start at 6:15 p.m.
"We would have liked to have one this one, we'll take the tie," Ernst said. "We came from behind three times against a good team, I'm proud of the girls."
