Something To Build On

Last year, the Swampscott boys track team missed the NEC Title by 1/10th of a second; this year they're primed to win it.

"Expectations are very high for us this year," explains Swampscott high boys outdoor trach coach Peter Bush. "This squad got edged out (of the Northeast Conference title) last year by Marblehead in the 4 x 100 relay in the last week and we've already talked about that.

They're focused and they know that it is on them to perform and win this year. Expectations are very high."

Coach Bush was talking about the team 10 days ago,  during the first week of practice.

Given that the team has lots of athletes registered to participate and given the veteran leadership they possess, Bush said his team is primed to improve upon last year's finish.

"As a program, the boys and girls squads have about 120 or 130 athletes this year," said Bush. "With the seniors and upper classmen we have, complemented by a freshman/sophomore squad that did win its division last year, we have a lot of talent and leadership."

Bush's squad will be led by senior captains ,Joe Nigro, , , , and .

Although the weather wasn't fully cooperative, when practices first got underway, Bush said his team had plenty of time to prepare for the first meet on April 5.

"We've got two full weeks to practice and train and we'll be getting otuside as soon as we can," Bush said. "We have 60 kids on the roster right now and we're obviously happy with that, because it gives us the depth to keep up with the Peabodys and Marbleheads. As a program that is something to be proud of."
