Softball Team Moves on With Win over Pine Hill, 19-11

The Swampscott Little League All-Star softball team plays Wyoma tonight and must win to keep its championship hopes alive.

coach Jim Capone says his players have been in every kind of game this district tournament, from tight low-scoring to high-scoring games.

On Wednesday at Mack Field in Salem, the 12-year-old Swampscott girls' team struck early scoring seven runs in the first inning, Capone said.

They continued to add two or three runs in subsequent innings.

Still, it was not one of the team's better played games, the coach said.

"It was a sloppy game for us, we were out of sync," he said.

Wednesday's action followed the epic extra-inning pressure cooker the Swampscott girls played against Wyoma on Monday.

On Wednesday, Veronica Rizzo pitched, going the distance.

"She hung in there," the coach said.

Today, Hannah Leahy will take the softball against Wyoma.

Wyoma is undefeated in the tournament and Swampscott has one loss, so the local team must beat Wyoma twice to win the district championship.

To get to that point they have to win the first one. The game is at the Forest Avenue softball field at 5:30.
