Paul Moran Basketball Camp a Big Hit

Since 1998, Swampscott's all-time leading scorer has taught the fundamentals to the youth of the North Shore.

Summer in Swampscott would not be the same without the annual Paul Moran Basketball Camp. The camp started in 1998 when Moran was the girls varsity basketball coach at Swampscott High. This year, the staff includes Winthrop High boys varsity coach, Dave Brown, who was a standout player himself at St. Mary's, and Salem High School Boys varsity coach, Tom Doyle.

The camp draws youngsters from all over the North Shore. One of the draws is the standout athletes who are Camp Counselors. Some of the best high school players from Marblehead, Saugus, Swampscott, and several other towns come together to teach the kids what they themselves have learned. "I try to bring back kids who attended the camp when they were young," says Moran, "this allows them the opportunity to teach kids the same lessons that they themselves learned at Moran Camp."

This year, the camp runs for three weeks at Marblehead Middle School. The first week was a Girls Only Camp. This week and next week are the Boys Camps. Throughout the week, many fun events such as Crazy Sock and Shirt Days, Team Spirit Days, Highlight Tapes, and Counselor vs. Camper games are held.
