Middle School Movie Experience to be Educational

The superintendent of schools wants to minimize disruptions to the Swampscott Middle School kids' education when Hollywood comes to shoot scenes for Grown Ups 2.

Adam Sandler has seen photographs of the l and he likes its look — it reminds him of a school he attended in Manchester, NH.

That's what a movie location manager told Swampscott school officials last week when he received their approval to film 4 1/2 days at the Forest Avenue school, said Superintendent Lynne Celli.

The shooting will take place between May 29 and June 5.

For all of the excitement, the goal will be to keep an eye on education and integrate movie production into classroom learning, the superintendent said.

Crew members, those who do the lighting, set design, camera and make-up and other jobs that make a movie come to life, may visit media or drama classrooms to share their knowledge.

There is also a possibility that crew members will talk to students at a school assembly, the superintendent said.

None of the middle school students will be appearing in the movie's school scenes. Growns Ups 2 will bring in their own kids, the superintendent said.

Also along the lines of minimizing disruptions, much of the set-up work will be done when the students are out of school.

And the filming will not conflict with MCAS testing, the superintendent said.

Anyone who comes in contact with students will need clearance via a CORI background check, and events will be monitored by police details, the superintendent said.

Ultimately, the movie offers an opportunity, Celli said.

"I'm very excited about the curriculum connection between the movie and the school," she said.

The movie will be in production in Marblehead and Swampscott from May 21 to Aug. 17.

Grown Ups 2 also plans to shoot at the Swampscott Train Station, perhaps on the platform, perhaps some time in June after school gets out.

Other scenes will not be on main drags in town.

The Adam Sandler movie is a sequel to Grown Ups, about the reunion of childhood friends. Stars include Sandler, David Spade, Taylor Lautner, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Maya Rudolph and Rob Schneider, according to IMDb.
