Middle School Hockey Run Ends in Semis

The hockey team was defeated 6-3 by Peabody after the Swampscott kids enjoyed a 20-win season.

Swampscott Middle School hockey Coach Dan Santanello said his 8th graders will soon make their presence known on the Big Blue hockey scene.

"They are going to be heard from," he said after the Swampscott kids ran into a high-octane Peabody team on Thursday on the Salem State ice.

One of the Peabody players scored three goals, and Swampscott failed to move the puck and generate offense they way they typically did throughout their 20-win season.

The coach said the Swampscott team usually plays a physical game but they appeared to be worried about penalties being called against them in the game against Peabody, a team they had beaten during the season.

The team's season started back on Oct. 15, the squad led by captains Mike Johnson, David Peterson and Jack Morretti.

They came into Thursday's game fresh off an exciting win over Salem, 2-1, last Monday.

Daniel Popouskiy scored with 4 minutes left in that game to propel Swampscott into the semi-finals.

The win boosted the Swampscott hockey squad's overall record to an impressive 20-4.

"The kids have done a great job playing a dual schedule between the Salem State Viking Middle School Hockey League and the school sponsored independent schedule," the coach said after the Salem win.

"I’ve got to believe that all of these kids will have an impact on the future success of Big Blue Hockey," the coach said.
