Marblehead Spoils Big Blue Softball Party

Swampscott knocked out of playoff contention with a 9-5 loss to Marblehead Wednesday on Senior Night.

The Marblehead High School girls’ softball team knocked the Big Blue out of post-season contention with a 9-5 win on Senior Night in Swampscott Wednesday.

There were blue and white balloons circling the field on Forest Avenue, cake and ice cream, but not enough runs to keep Swampscott (6-11) alive in their bid to make the state tournament.

The Big Blue needed to run the table, winning four of their final four games to qualify for the playoffs after losing to Winthrop on Tuesday.

Swampscott’s two seniors Lauren Sullivan and Heather Tevrow were recognized before the game began, as were Marblehead’s three seniors Sarah Hastings, Christina Leggett and Emmy York.

“I’m disappointed that we lost, it’s tough,” Swampscott’s Lauren Sullivan said after the game. “I’ve had a great time on this team and with these teammates, and I’ll miss being with my team.”

Swampscott plays Everett Thursday afternoon, and plays in the Holland Memorial Tournament in Lynn over the weekend, with Lynn Classical, Lynn English and St. Mary’s.

The Headers were rocking right on the game’s first pitch that Kathryn DiGiammarino knocked over the fence off of Big Blue starter Angela Vousboukis.

Swampscott closed to 7-5 after five innings, but Marblehead plated three insurance runs for reliever Michaela Leblanc. Leblanc replaced Sarah Hastings in the third inning.

“I was losing a little but of my control and I walked a few people,” Hastings said. “The girls picked it up for me and Michaela did a great job on the mound after me.”

“It’s always competitive when we play Swampscott, they’re a good team and I’m glad we won,” Hastings said.

Vousboukis pitched a complete game for the Big Blue and Tevrow knocked in three runs with a bases loaded double.

Marblehead (11-7) hits the road for their next two games, Thursday at 4 p.m. in Malden and Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Revere.
