Late Comeback Falls Short

St. John's Boy's Bantams Drop Tough One

At the St. Joseph Parish Center in Medford, the Boys Bantams opened the 2011-2012 season. Swampscott trailed most of the game before a late comeback cut the lead to one. But Medford's late free throws sealed the game and St. John's fell 35-28.

St. John's fell behind early as St. Joseph jumped out to a 6-0 lead. With 9:39 left in the half, Jake McIntire broke the ice for the first basket of the season. After a defensive stop, Simon Keough cut the lead to two.

Both teams exchanged baskets as the half wound down. Another McIntire basket kept St. John's within two with 1:31 left. But a late surge by Medford gave them a 16-10 halftime lead.

St. Joe's extended the lead to eight to start the second half. Swampscott came roaring back. Luke Marshall and Sam Mayblyum got the lead down to four, but Medford matched them to take a 22-14 lead.

Defense would keep Swampscott in the game, Jake Goldman cut the lead to six and then came up with a steal and was fouled. He hit both free throws to bring St. John's within four with 9:28 left in the game.
