Big Blue Girls Declaw Panthers 54-21

The girls ran out to a 16-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, bumping up their record to 6-1.

The basketball team returned home Friday after four away games and routed Beverly, 54-21.

Niki Laskaris was Blue's top scorer with 16 points, including two three-pointers. She hit the glass, too, snaring seven rebounds.

Ara Talkov poured in 15 and was perfect from the stripe, going 5 for 5.

The whole team shot well from the foul line, sinking 12 of 16, said coach Jack Hughes.

The coach said point guard Marina Padovani was a floor general against the Beverly Tigers.

She dished out seven assists, grabbed five rebounds and stole the ball twice.

“She just runs things for us,” he said.

Carolyn Murphy pounded the boards — grabbing seven rebounds — and chipped in eight points.

Merry Ball played a tough all-around game.

She had five points, five rebounds, three assists and played inspired defense, the coach said.

The Swampscott girls played with grit to the buzzer.

With about 4 minutes to go Blue was leading 46-19 but the team had no desire to coast to victory.

Jesse DePaolo hit the floor for loose balls. Alexa Goldman pushed the ball up court. And Merry Ball drove the lane.

The coach said the girls, 6-1, have a big game ahead of them on Tuesday when they square up against Revere.

The game is at Swampscott High.
