Kennedy's Six Goals Power Big Blue Over Saugus

Swampscott High School varsity lacrosse won big over Saugus, 13-8.

After stumbling in their last few games, the Big Blue were out to right the ship.  But underdog Saugus had other ideas.

With rain and sloppy field conditions, they jumped out to an early lead.  But Swampscott’s Patrick Kennedy led a Big Blue comeback with six goals and three assists in their 13-8 win at Saugus.

It took nearly seven minutes before Kennedy scored assisted by Sean Lannon for a 1-0 lead. Saugus took advantage of the field conditions at Saugus High School (the game had been moved from Stackpole field due to the weather conditions) and scored two goals to lead 2-1 after one quarter.

Saugus kept rolling by taking a 2 goal lead 2:49 into the 2nd quarter. Josh Rothwell answered back 22 seconds later scoring off a rebound to make it 3-2.

Sean Lannon continued to shift the momentum back to Swampscott as he tied the game assisted by Kennedy and Brian Santry with just under 6 minutes left in the half. Kennedy then gave Swampscott its first lead from Billy Valle and Rothwell with 3:23 left.

But Saugus tied it with 55 seconds left and the half closed with the score 4-4.

The Sachems opened the second half with an early goal and the decided underdogs were controlling the game with a 5-4 lead.  Lannon tied the game(from Brian Santry) just under three minutes later. Swampscott called a timeout and then went right to work.

One minute later, Brian Santry grabbed a loose ball and scored to retake the lead, 6-5. Lannon scored (from Kennedy) for a two goal lead with 7:20 left in the third.  Kennedy then went on a three goal tear.

He scored at 3:41 (unassisted), 3:02(from Lannon) and 1:45( from Santry) to make it 10-5. Just 15 seconds later, Lannon scored Swampscott’s 6th straight goal (from Kennedy and Valle).  Then with 18 seconds left in the quarter, Kennedy scored his 6th goal of the game on an underhanded shuffle pass from Brian Santry to make it 12-5 at the end of three quarters.

Swampscott Junior Derek Mayo made his first varsity appearance in net to start the 4th quarter.

After an early Saugus goal, Sean Lannon scored his fifth of the game for a 13-6 lead.

Despite a late Saugus surge, the Big Blue were too much for the Sachems. With the win, Swampscott improves to 7-2 (NEC), 7-7 overall.

They play at Arlington Catholic(12-3 overall) on Wednesday.
