Goldman Sparks St. John's to Win
December 16, 2011 — At the Swampscott Middle School, the Boys Bantams took on Our Lady of Assumption of Lynnfield. Jake Goldman ignited St. John's out of its early funk as they rolled to a 46-25 win.

OLA scored the first eight points before St. John's guard, Jake Goldman, came off the bench to start a rally. His steal and then acrobatic hoop while falling down cut the lead to 8-4 and got St. John's going. Jake McIntire's basket from Noah Carreiro pulled St. John's even at nine at the 6:56 mark of the first half. The lead shifted back and forth until Goldman hit a jumper with 2:14 left to give St. John's the lead for good. Late baskets by Sam Mayblyum and Noah Carreiro, both off offensive rebounds, made it 22-16 at the half in favor of the home team.

Noah Carreiro got things started in the second half to extend the lead to eight. Jake Goldman's bank shot with 10:24 left in the game pushed the lead to double digits. Simon Keough scored on Swampscott's next two possesions to make it 34-21. From there, Noah Carreiro took over. He hit back to back baskets and then drained two free throws to put the game away. Carreiro had 13 second half rebounds. A late Max Pegnato hoop followed by a Cole Cassidy made free throw ended the game with a St. John's win.

Carreiro finished with a double/double of 14 points and 18 rebounds. Jake Goldman had 10 points and provided the much needed lift for St. John's in the easy win.

St. John's Runs Out of Time
December 17, 2011 — At Matignon High School in Cambridge, the Girls Bantams took on St. Rafael of Medford. St. John's was never able to recover from a slow start as they fell 37-19.

In a rematch of a one point game a week earlier, St. Rafael left nothing to chance. They came out on fire and bolted to a 14-0 lead. Kayla Kornitsky got St. John's on the board with a drive to the hoop at the 8:55 mark. But Medford wouldn't let Swampscott back into the game and entered the half with a commanding lead.

Katie Watts tried to spark St. John's with a jumper 7 seconds into the second half. But St. Rafael would not go down. They pushed the lead to twenty before Swampscott made one last run. Pressure defense and baskets by Abby Bruhm and Mary Miles sent St. John's on a 6-1 run to close out the game but they simply ran out of time.

Despite the lopsided loss, the girls never gave up right up to the end. "I was proud of their effort. They never gave up," said Head Coach Jody Watts.

Kayla Kornitsky led St. John's with 6 points and 10 rebounds. Molly Marocco had a strong game on the boards with 8 second half rebounds and 10 overall.

St. John's Holds On for Win
December 17, 2011 — At Matignon High School in Cambridge, the Girls Cadets took on St. Rafael of Medford. St. John's took the win led by strong defense and rebounding in a 25-16 defensive battle.

St. John's struck first. After a made free throw, Elizabeth Weisse came up with the first of many steals to put Swampscott up 3-0. Two made free throws by Kendall Rhodes with 9:07 left in the half extended the lead to five. After a made Medford basket, Hannah Leahy scored five straight points, the last on a nice pass from Veronica Rizzo to make it 13-5 in favor of St. John's. With 1:24 left in the half, Kasey Kennedy topped off a 10-0 run with a steal and hoop. The half ended with St. John's leading 17-5.

In the second half, St. John's couldn't buy a basket early and St. Rafael cut the lead to six points. It took just over 11 minutes for St. John's to get a second half basket. Elizabeth Weisse finally made it 19-11 with 3:59 left in the game. With Medford turning up the heat, Jaymie Caponigro grabbed another of her 10 rebounds in the game and took it the length of the court to make it 21-13 with 2:50 to go. St. John's closed it out on a Lily Burkett hoop with 49 seconds left and then held on for the 25-16 win.

Hannah Leahy led St. John's with 8 points and 17 rebounds. Guards Jaymie Caponigro(10 rebounds) and Elizabeth Weisse(5 points) did not wilt under the full court pressure to keep Swampscott in the game despite a scoring drought.

On Sunday December 18th, the Girls Cadets traveled to Wakefield to take on OLA. After trailing 14-9 at the half, they came back to win 28-24. The win improved their record to 4-2 and they take on the undefeated league powerhouse, St. Adelaide of Peabody Tuesday night.

St. John's Keeps Rolling
December 17, 2011 — At the Swampscott Middle School, the Boys Cadets took on St. Joseph of Medford Blue. The game was never in doubt as St. John's won easily.

Donnie Weisse scored on a runner just 43 seconds into the game and the route was on. Travis Thurman's put back at the 11:51 mark made it 8-0. After 3 straight Medford points, Jake Roberts hit a long range 3-pointer to maintain the eight point lead. Colin O'Brian extended the lead to double digits with 4:50 to go in the half. Swampscott entered the half up by eleven at 23-12.

Donnie Weisse scored the first two hoops of the second half to make it 27-12. Just minutes later, he fed Matty Moran for a hook shot and a foul. Moran's made free throw made the score 32-18. But Moran wasn't finished yet. He grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, followed by a baseline jumper to make it 36-18 with 10:13 to go. There would be no St. Joseph comeback.
