Girls Basketball Brings Momentum To Tournament

The Big Blue will have to wait another night to see who their opponent will be on Saturday since the Stoneham vs. Lynnfield game was postponed until Thursday night.

Coach Jack Hughes and the girls on the basketball team will have to wait another night to find out who their first opponent will be in the Division III North tournament.

They get the winner of Lynnfield and Stoneham, whose game on Wednesday was postponed until Thursday due to weather.

Whoever the opponent is, they have got to be a good team if they qualified for post-season play, the Swampscott coach told his players.

The Swampscott girls are a veteran team who played well down the stretch, the coach said.

They defeated rival Marblehead, another tournament team, and won the St. Mary's tournament by defeating Weston and Ipswich.

"We went on a nice run," he said.

The team has had no real games since last week but the players have stayed fresh with a good scrimmage against Lynn English and by practicing hard.

Big Blue's record this season, 17-3, improved considerably over last year's 6-14 record.

The coach attributes the improvement to experience.

"It's a veteran team," he said. "They've been playing together a few years."

When they take the home court against either Stoneham or Lynnfield on Saturday at 7 pm, the coach wants his team to be poised and ready to play.
