Fundraiser for Injured Hockey Player in Nahant Saturday Night

Friends of Mike Tansey, including many from Swampscott, are putting on a fundrairaiser to help the injured hockey player and his family.

If you found yourself in a pick-up hockey game on the Lynnway over the past 10-20 years, there’s a good chance Mike Tansey was on the ice too.

The Lynn man was injured in a car accident last October and his hockey friends are putting on a fundraiser to help Mike and his family in Nahant on Saturday night.

“Mike’s a great guy, I skated with him for years, off and on, always fun to be around,” Swampscott’s James Kirby said. “He was a mailman in Salem for a long time.”

Tansey flipped his car on route 128 during a heavy rainstorm last October. The accident put him in the hospital for five months, paralyzed from the neck down. Tansey has returned home, but he has a long way to go.

Swampscott native Brad Gadon played hockey with Mike during many “friendly rentals” on the Lynnway.

“Mike has a wife and two kids, it’s a very hard situation to be in for all of them, we’re hoping to raise some money Saturday and show our support for Mike,” Gadon said.

Tansey’s family has had to modify their home to accommodate him after he was released from the hospital.

The fundraiser kicks off at the Nahant Country Club Saturday night at 6 p.m. There are raffles and a silent auction planned to help raise money for Mike and his family.

“Mike’s in good spirits, he’s looking at his situation with optimism,” Gordon McCormick said. “Hockey players are a unique bunch, we compete hard against each other, but we’re all good friends off the ice, if we can do a little to help Mike and his family that’s great.”

The fundraiser for Mike Tansey and his family is Saturday night from 6-12 at the Nahant Country Club. Tickets are 25 dollars and are available at the door.
