Frosh Hoops Sink Sachems

The win pulled the team to 500 on the young season, 2-2.

After a 36-30 victory over Saugus on December 22, the boys’ freshman basketball team’s record is now 2-2, with victories over Saugus and Gloucester (41-22) and losses to Danvers and Winthrop.  

The win over Saugus was a real team effort, fueled by tight defense, good ball movement throughout the game and an even offensive attack, with 10 of 13 Big Blue players scoring.

Saugus came out flat, scoring only 6 points to the Big Blue’s 19 in the first half. No Big Blue player made more than one basket in the first half, with eight different players hitting two point field goals and one, Devin Conroy, sinking a 3 pointer, in the second quarter.  

In the second half, Shea Nugent added 4 points, Max Petras had one on a free throw, and Sam Beermann led the team with 12 points, most on layups after Swampscott broke Saugus’s press.

Eric McCathern, Spencer Mulvey and Chris Myette were key ball handlers for the Big Blue, and Charlie Arena, Beermann and Matt Donaher took care of the boards.

The whole team played excellent defense, staving off Saugus’s spirited attack in the second half.
