Fight and Forfeit Ends Lacrosse Game

Big Blue lost 7-1 Thursday at home in a forfeit shortened game against Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School.

At least one Big Blue lacrosse player was ejected and two Hamilton-Wenham players were ejected from Thursday's game at Phillips Park.

Big Blue Coach Josh Field forfeited the game after the fight, said Swampscott Athletic Director Alison Argentieri.

The athletic director attended the game as planned and learned about the incident after her arrival, shortly after the fight broke out. She was briefed on it by coach Field.

Swampscott was trailing 7-1 in the second quarter when rough play escalated to a fracas.

A hard hit during a face-off sent several players to the ground, the athletic director said.

A scuffle ensued and some but not all players came off the benches and on to the field.

Swampscott player Rich Sullivan was ejected and will be suspended for at least one game, Argentieri said.

She and the coach will look at video footage of the fight and talk to the players, she said.

"Josh and I will meet with the kids tomorrow and go from there," she said.

The coach deferred comment to the athletic director.

Argentieri has seen emotions flare on the lacrosse field in the past.

"It's unfortunate because they are good kids and good players," she said. "Their heads are in the right place but their emotions can get the best of them."

The junior varsity teams from Swampscott and Hamilton-Wenham played after the varsity game.

The Generals of Ham-Wen were leading by several goals shortly before halftime.

Blue lacrosse returns to action on Friday with a home game at 4:30 p.m. against Weston High School.
