VIDEO: Ferri No-Hits the Big Blue Softball Team

No hits, no runs, no fun for the Big Blue softball team. Winthrop's Alex Ferri thorws a no-hitter in 5-0 Viking win on Tuesday afternoon.

There’s no margin for error for the Big Blue softball team. Swampscott must run the table, winning their final four games, starting Wednesday afternoon against Marblehead, to qualify for the state tournament.

Winthrop junior Alex Ferri pitched a gem in Swampscott Tuesday afternoon, striking out 14 Big Blue batters on her way to a no-hitter and a 5-0 win.

Ferri was sterling on the mound, striking out at least two batters in every inning but the fourth. Swampscott hitters walked three times and put the ball in play just seven times against the Viking hurler.

Winthrop (9-10) was looking to get back on the winning track after a 12-1 loss to Danvers, and a tight 4-3 loss to Lynn Classical on Monday.

Swampscott hadn’t played since last Wednesday, an 8-3 loss to Danvers. The Big Blue have lost four one-run games this season, and have to beat the Headers Wednesday afternoon to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

“We had a tough two innings to start,” Swampscott coach Frank Kowalski said. “We settled down after that, Stephanie (Collins) pitched well but we did not do anything with the bats.”

The only highlight for the Big Blue was a steal of second by Lindsey Marini in the fourth. Swampscott only had four base runners all day against Ferri.

“Lexi did a nice job,” Winthrop coach Dave Guffy said. “We got her some runs in our first two at bats, and she slammed the door today.”

Winthrop locked up a state tournament bid last week.

Tessa Beane, Lauren Sullivan and Marini were the only batters that Ferri didn’t whiff on Tuesday.

Swampscott takes on Marblehead at home Wednesday at 4 p.m., a game that was originally scheduled for Swampscott, but the two teams switched a game (a Swampscott loss) to Marblehead earlier this season.

It’s Senior Day at the game Wednesday, Swampscott’s two seniors, Lauren Sullivan and Heather Tevrow will be recognized before the game.

The Blue must beat the Headers Wednesday afternoon and knock off Everett on the road Thursday, sweep two games at Breed Junior High in Lynn in the annual John Holland Memorial Softball Tournament over the weekend.

The NEC champion Lynn Classical Rams are the opposition in the first game of the tournament.
