Cross Country Splits With MHD

On the boys' side, Peter Hale set a Swampscott record; and for the girls, Hannah King came in second.

The last meet before the NEC championship on Saturday saw boys defeat their rivals from Marblehead.

And the Marblehead girls were buoyed by a strong performance from Mary Kauffman.

Both crews were highly charged before the meet, eager to defend bragging rights on their home course.

Marblehead boys' coach Brian Heenan warned his troops that the Swampscott kids were hungry.

"I told them, 'If we didn't come out strong Swampscott was going to pounce,'" Heenan said after the race. "That is what happened."

For his part, Swampscott Coach Jeffrey Bartlett told his kids to run their race. Do their best.

Big Blue runner Peter Hale won the race, setting a Swampscott record — 13:54.

James Wigglesworth was the first Marblehead runner to cross the finish line.

Mary Kauffman of Marblehead was in control from the beginning of the race.

She got out in front taking long strides and stayed there.

Hannah King was the first Big Blue runner to cross the finish line, coming in second.

Both the boys and the girls will compete in the NEC Championships on Saturday in Topsfield.

Matt Nardiello (senior, 9th place: 14:58). 

Girls: Marblehead 20 Swampscott 38

Alison Carr (sophomore, 6th place: 18:31)

Karyssa King (senior; 8th place: 18:59)

Alyssa Mauriello (freshman, 9th place: 19:03)

Caroline Klusza (sophomore, 12th place: 19:41)
 

Marblehead Girls:

The first place finisher for the was Mary Kauffman (sr) with a 17:11, third was Carly Robb (sr) with 18:05, fourth was Janaya Randall (so) with 18:15, fifth was Lillie Johnston with 18:25, and seventh was Lily Roberts with 18:54.
