Boys and Girls Track Down Falcons

The Boys Outdoor Track & Field Team took on the Danvers Falcons Wednesday afternoon in cloudy, cool conditions at Jackson Park. The Big Blue emerged with their fifth win of the season, defeating the well-coached Falcons with a score of 81-55 to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The Big Blue earned points from multiple scorers, and have been seeing consistent improvement throughout the season in all events. A key to Swampscott's success was spreading the point scoring among many athletes while having a core group score in multiple events.

Senior Matt Nardiello led off the meet with a victory in the 400 intermediate hurdles, running 60 seconds flat. Sophomore Aidan Brawley placed second with a 62.9, only four tenths of a second away from qualifying for the State Meet.

The two mile was a dual for the ages between sophomore Matt Mahoney and senior Brain Hebert of Danvers. An intense, tactical chess match on the track, the race started out slow and ramped up in the second half. Despite running his second mile in 5:03, Mahoney was just edged out by Hebert, with Mahoney placing second in an outdoor personal best of 10:14, one second off of his personal best.

Freshman Robert McLaughlin, running his best race of his year, ran a personal best by thirty seven seconds to place third with an 11:16.
Junior sprinter Zach Blonder took the 100 meters with an 11.4, picking up five points. Junior Peter Hale took first place in the mile, running a smart race to finish in 4:34. Also in the mile, senior captain Nick Hartmann qualified for the State Meet with a 4:46 for third place. Another noteworthy performance in the one mile was a huge PR by Thomas McEnaney (5:53) who has taken 22 seconds off his mile time since the season began.

The 4x100 relay quartet of Maleek Newsome, Phil Smith, Richie Sullivan, and Zach Blonder took first place with a 46.8. Sophomore Kevin Nguyen then ran a personal best time in the 110 meter high hurdles (17.2) to earn a crucial second place finish against the Falcons.

Taking the track next were the 400 meter runners, who swept the event. They were led by junior Declan McClung, who led the way with a 53.7; Sophomore Ian Munnelly (55.6) and Junior Gabe Golden (57.2) completed the sweep. In the 800, senior captain Ryan Kelley and freshman Bennett Smith worked with senior captain Trevor Whelan to share the pacing duties. Kelley place second with a 2:12, followed by Smith in third with a personal best of 2:14. Senior Phil Smith and sophomore Maleek Newsome both doubled back in the 200 to go 1-2 with times of 23.8 (a PR for Smith) and 24.3.

In the field events, the Big Blue capitalized and picked up some important points. In his first meet competing in the high jump, Aidan Brawley placed a crucial third place (5'2") to prevent a Danvers sweep of the event. Matt Nardiello followed his hurdle victory up with a second place in the long jump (17'2") and Junior Rob Seymour took first in the shot put (42'4").  Senior James Beane won the discus (131'4") and Rob Seymour took third (107'5"). The Big Blue swept the javelin with the trio of Aidan Brawley (125'1"), Peter Hale (117'10"), and Trevor Whalen (117'11"). The 4x400 quartet of Ian Munnelly (60), Peter Hale (55.5), Declan McClung (56.9) and Matt Nardiello (58.2) finished the meet by winning with a time of 3:50.3.
Overall, today was a big step in the right direction for the Big Blue.
