Black and Blues With Impressive Pins [VIDEO]

The combined Swampscott/Marblehead wrestling team lost their first match by a wide margin to Beverly but went to the mat in a close one against Danvers-Hamilton/Wenham on Saturday.

 

Thewrestling team lost two team matches at the Northeastern Conference tournament held on Saturday at Beverly High School, but several members of  the team had outstanding individual performances in both varsity and junior varsity matches.

In its first meet of the 2011-2012 season, the Black & Blue team lost 60-14 against Beverly High School, but Marblehead junior Sean Taylor, wrestling as a heavyweight, pinned his opponent at 1:14 of the first period for 6 points, Swampscott junior Jacob Powell, wrestling at 113 pounds, earned a tech fall in his match, wining 23-6 for 5 points, and Marblehead senior Jeff Sherman, wrestling at 126 pounds, won his match 4-3 for 3 points.

In the second match, the Black and Blue team lost a heartbreaker to Danvers-Hamilton/Wenham 42-36, but enjoyed stellar performances by several members of the team.

Marblehead junior, Ali Atallah, wrestling at 170 pounds, pinned his opponent at 1:31 of the first period, for 6 points, Sherman pinned his opponent at 42 seconds of the first period for 6 points, Taylor pinned his opponent at 21 seconds of the first period, earning 6 points, Swampscott senior Parker Kahn, wrestling at 220 pounds, pinned his opponent at 42 seconds of the first period, and Powell pinned his opponent at 1:49 of the second period for 6 points.

Several Marblehead and Swampscott wrestlers also earned wins in junior varsity matches, including Jonah Weinstein, Gabe Field, Anthony Rizzo, and Dmytriy Ladohka. Michael McCuish, a Swampscott sophomore, wrestled well in his first-ever varsity matches. 

 “We had a great showing today at the NEC Tournament,” said Mike Stamison, the head coach of the Black & Blue wrestling team. “I was very happy with the way everyone competed, especially in the meet against Danvers and in the junior varsity matches.”

The team has a dual meet against Peabody on Wednesday at 6 pm at Peabody High School and a tournament in Tyngsboro on Saturday.
