Big Blue Track Teams Split

The Swampscott girls track team won and the boys came up short against the Salem Witches.

The Swampscott and Salem teams battled it out in track Thursday afternoon at Swampscott High.

The girls won their meet 80-56.

Salem took first place in 9 of 16 events but the overall team effort of the Swampscott group gave them the meet victory as they consistently dominated the second and third place finishes.

"The girls won and did an amazing job today," Coach Joe Tenney said. "The team has been showing more and more signs of coming together as one huge track team. My seniors down to my little freshmen are amazing."

On the boys side, a highlite included the team's sweep of the triple jump event with first, second and third finishes by Jake Conaty, PJ Nestor and James Beane.

Salem won the meet, 72-56.

Swampscott Coach Peter Bush said Salem is well coached team and has some very talented athletes.

Still, outstanding efforts in the running events almost pulled Big Blue to within the 5 points to get the meet to come down to the relay, he said.

"I am very proud of the way we continued to compete throughout the entire meet," he said, "but we now have to focus on getting healthy and getting some extra work with our field event competitors."
