Big Blue Outrun Vikings

Boys outdoor track is off and running with a big win over Winthrop by a score of 107.5 to 28.5. The girls team ran away from their opponent, too, winning the meet by a score of 99 to 37.

Swampscott's boys and girls outdoor track teams left the starting blocks to the 2011 season with convincing  wins over Winthrop Thursday.

Boys Coach Peter Bush was pleased, overall, with his team's showing but sees room for improvement.

"Everyone performed very well but there is still a great amount of work to do."  The coach stressed the need for his team to remain committed and motivated to work hard in practice and spend the extra time paying attention to detail.  "That's the way to improve."

Standout multiple victors Thursday included Jermaine Kelly, with wins in the javelin and the high hurdles, Jake Conaty who won the triple jump and finished second in the mile and the long jump, and Matt Nardiello, who won the low hurdles and took third in the high jump and long jump.

Girls team Coach Joe Tenney was pleased with his team.

"I think we had a great start to the meet yesterday considering the weather and (it being) the first meet of the year," he said.

Tenney just wants some good weather to be able to get outside and practice field events more.

Emma Walsh was a multiple winner, taking first in the 400 low hurdles and the long jump.

The teams run again Tuesday against Salem.
