Big Blue Girls Lacrosse Nets Two Wins in Two Days

After a slow start the team is gaining some traction, most recently by defeating Salem on Thursday, 10-4.

Information for this season summary, so far, was supplied by Coach Paula Donnelly.

Swampscott girls lacrosse Coach Paula Donnelly reported before the team's last game that on the whole, they were off to a slow start.

But that slow start has picked up some momentum with the team winning two in a row.

The team defeated Salem 10-4 on Thursday, boosting the Big Blue's record to 2-3, the Boston Globe reported. The news brief also noted that senior netminder Samantha Coogan stopped 15 shots for Swampscott.

The day before, April 11, the team got its first win knocking down Melrose on their field, the coach said.

Before the season started the coach was hopeful the team would hit the ground running, what with the ideal spring weather.

But they have yet to have their entire roster together, the coach said earlier this week. They were missing multiple starters due to injury and illness, and are quite inexperienced in a lot of positions, particularly in the midfield, the coach said.

April 10

Swampscott 14, Melrose 7

"With 5 starters sidelined, we earned our first win of the season. Again, we played a stronger second half, outscoring Melrose 10-3. Katie Zarinsky led the scoring with 6 goals; Taylor Eaton and Jesse DePaolo added three each; Gillian Trask had a goal and an assist and Lauren Sullivan also added a goal. Samantha Coogan played her most complete game of the season with 9 saves, including several big saves in the second half to keep the momentum going our way. Alexa Goldman (junior), Kristen Connor (senior), and Maddie McKie (senior) anchored a strong defensive game, forcing several turnovers.

April 3 vs. Newburyport — Newburyport 18, Swampscott 8

The season got off to a slow start, with the Big Blue going down 13-3 in the first half. We were able to gain a little traction in the second half but we couldn't get enough of a transition game going to make up the difference. Senior Katie Zarinsky had 3 goals; senior Jesse DePaolo had 2 goals and an assist; senior Taylor Eaton also had 2 goals and sophomore Lauren Sullivan added her first varsity goal.

April 6 vs. Beverly — Beverly 14, Swampscott 7
For the second consecutive game, we dug ourselves a huge first half hole, being down 12-3 at the half. It's tough to come back against any team, but especially quality teams like Beverly and Newburyport before them. Senior captains led the scoring -- Jesse DePaolo had 3 goals; Taylor Eaton added 2 goals and an assist, and Katie Zarinsky had 2 goals. Samantha Coogan (also a senior captain) had 7 saves in the loss.

April 9 at Bedford — Bedford 17, Swampscott 14
The pattern of coming out flat continued, as we were down 13-6 at the half. The strong second half was too little, too late but certainly showed our potential. Taylor Eaton led all scorers with 6 goals; Katie Zarinsky had 3 goals and an assist; Jesse DePaolo added 3 goals, and Lauren Sullivan and Gillian Trask (junior) tallied a goal apiece. Samantha Coogan helped spearhead the second half comeback with a total of 17 saves and Maddie McKie (senior) played a strong game defensively.
