Big Blue Baseball Gets By Salem

Solid pitching from Sean O'Brien and four RBI's by Mike Walsh push Swampscott past the Witches, 6-4 Monday night.

Swampscott rode the arm of junior Sean O’Brien and the bat of junior Mike Walsh, coming from behind to beat Salem 6-4 Monday night on Forest Avenue.

O’Brien struck out six Witches and Walsh hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first and a two-run blast in the bottom of the third on two curveballs from Salem hurler Daniel Dobrosielski.

Salem (4-5) took a 3-1 lead in the top of the third, but Frank Legere walked in the bottom of the inning and came home when Walsh put an 0-2 pitch over the left field fence, tying the score at three.

Swampscott scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth; Legere singled, stole second and went to third on a poke to right by Nick Meninno. Legere scored on a passed ball, and Meninno came home when Walsh grounded out to short.

The Witches cut the Blue lead to one, when Dobrosielski singled home Edgardo Medrano in the top of the sixth. Salem was looking to tie the score, but Walsh snagged a hard shot up the third base line by Rafael Medrano and fired to Gino Cresta at second, doubling up Dobrosielski and ending the threat.

The Blue (6-4) picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Matt Videtta drove home pinch runner Robert Serino from third base with a single to right-center.

O’Brien punched out Juan Pena, Jenssy Troncoso and Ben Kapnis to end the game.

“It was a good high school baseball game,” Salem coach Jim Tgettis said.  “Swampscott has really improved since last year.”

“In the six years I’ve been here we’ve always had close games with Salem, and this one was no different,” Big Blue coach T. J. Baril said after the game.

Salem hosts Gloucester on Wednesday and travel to Winthrop to play the Vikings Friday afternoon.

Swampscott travels to Lynn Classical for a 7 p.m. start on Wednesday, and head right back to Fraser Field on Friday night at 7 p.m. to take on Lynn English.
