All-Star 12's Fall in Extra Innings to Peabody American

Peabody American hands Swampscott their first loss in the District 16 12 year-old All-Star tournament, winning 7-6 in eight innings Thursday night at Volunteer Field in Lynn.

Two teams sporting 2-0 records in the District 16 12 year-old All-Star tournament met up Thursday night at Volunteer Field in Lynn, and when the 48th out was recorded, in the bottom of the eighth inning, Peabody American had another tight victory, this time 7-6 over .

Peabody American came in with wins over Salem American and Winthrop, while the 12 year-olds from Swampscott got by Nahant and Peabody National setting up last night’s game, both teams looking to play Wyoma ((9-1 winners over Lynnfield) this Saturday.

Swampscott got on top in the bottom of the first, Owen Madigan-Fried drove home Jack Moretti, with a two-out double. Moretti had walked off Peabody American starter Frank Celona.

Swampscott’s pitcher Dan Muller was touched for a run in the top of the second, a two-out single by Derek Dellisola driving in Nolan Shaw from third. Shaw and Cameron Eon were on board with singles before Dellisola came through with two outs.

Swampscott moved up 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Stephen Hopkins walked and came home on an infield error.

Peabody American plated four runs in the top of the fifth to go up, 5-2. With one out, Ryan Newbury, Kyle Hentosh, Celona, Alex Gomes and Shaw all had hits before Muller could get out of the inning. The big blow a single by Celona knocking in Newbury and Hentosh.

“Frankie played great for us,” Peabody American manager Don Shaw said. “We got some key hits when we needed them, and Frankie was huge for us tonight.”

Swampscott came right back to tie it in their half of the fifth, Caleb Mazow, Ryan Donnelly and the second run by Jack Moretti knotted it up at 5-5 after five.

Shaw had lifted Celona in favor of Hentosh, who gave up and RBI single to Gavin Sullivan before getting A. J. Venuti on a ground out.

The score stayed 5-5 until the Peabody American eighth inning. Pellisola walked with one out and scampered home on an opposite field triple to left by Hentosh. Newbury struck out, and Celona legged out an infield hit, Hentosh scoring the seventh, and eventual winning run.

“Great hustle play by Frankie,” Shaw said. “He did a great job for us on the mound, in the field and at the plate for us tonight.”

Swampscott would not go down quietly in the bottom of the eighth. Gavin Sullivan legged out a double to start the inning, and was still standing at second with two outs. Caleb Mazow drove in Sullivan with a single, Donnelly walked, to put two on with two out, but Hentosh retired Louis Olivieri to end the game.

Peabody American moves to 3-0 in the tournament, while Swampscott falls to 2-1. Kyle Hentosh got the win on the hill for Peabody American, Gavin Sullivan took the loss for Swamspcott.

“We’re not a team that’s going to hit the ball out of the ballpark,” Swampscott manager Lou Olivieri said. “Peabody was able to string more key hits together tonight than we were, so give them credit, they played well.”

Peabody American will play Wyoma on Saturday; Swampscott will play Sunday against the winner of the Peabody National-Peabody West game Saturday morning.
