A Team WIth Grit

The Her-ricanes soccer team defied convention by carving out a winning tradition in their first year of indoor soccer.

Every Monday Swampscott Patch features a "whiz kid (or kids)."

They are children and teens who are out there making a difference. Do you know someone you would like to nominate? E-mail us at terry.date@Patch.com

Ages: 7 and 8

Schools: Clarke, Hadley and Stanley schools.

Why the Her-ricanes? The team accomplished more than anyone thought they would.

They won the league tittle on Feb. 11, by defeating Middleton 4-3.

They finished the season on top at 6-1-1 and put Swampscott on the map in regards to girls soccer, said coach Shane McCarran.

Coach McCarran said this was the girls first time ever playing indoor soccer, and they are the first U-8 girls team to represent the town at this facility.   "Swampscott does not get a lot of respect from other towns when it comes to soccer, but this team really started to open peoples eyes during the season," the coach said.

They played on Thursday afternoons at the North Shore United Soccer Arena at the Topsfield Fairgrounds.  They played against teams from Boxford, Danvers, Georgetown, North Andover, Middleton and Topsfield.

Two weeks ago they beat Danvers 2-1, a team that had never lost in two seasons at this facility.

For the Her-ricanes determination and competitive spirit we recognize them as whiz kids.
