Autism & Law Enforcement Education Coalition Workshop

The Swampscott Special Education Parent Advisory Council in partnership with the Autism & Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC) will be hosting a workshop with Lance Mason, ALEC Program Consultant

Date:  Wednesday, February 12th
Location:  Swampscott High School, 200 Essex St., Room B129
Time:  7:00pm – 9:00pm

Lance Mason has worked for the City of Leominster Fire Department for 11 years and has been an ALEC Instructor for nine years.  He has trained first responders in Swampscott, as well as towns and cities nearby.

In our workshop, Lance will talk about what he prepares first responders to expect.  He will also talk about how as parent/caregiver what your role in preparing your loved one for emergency situations, what is your role in informing your local first responder agencies about your loved one diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and how do you go about doing these things?  There will be discussion about the importance of home fire safety, wandering, ID tags, ID stickers, and even travel safety tips.  There will be plenty of time for a question and answer period.

The ALEC Program began in 2003 as a collaborative effort of The Arc of South Norfolk Family Autism Center and Norfolk County District Attorney, William R. Keating.  ALEC provides training to police officers, firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, court room and hospital emergency room personnel, using curriculum and videos specific to each group.

Presenters are First Responders with direct knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders through a family member. Because of this personal knowledge, in addition to their specific professional background , they are able to answer questions on a wide range of possible situations.
