VIDEO: No Stopping It Kids, School Starts Aug. 30

Some are relieved, some are depressed, either way, schools in Swampscott will open their doors for the 2011-2012 school year at the end of August.

Rocker Alice Cooper and his band wrote “School’s Out” in 1972 and the singer said they wrote the song to celebrate one of the best days in a kid’s year, the last day of school.

The last day of school has faded out of the rearview mirror and it’s time to head back to the classroom for the 2011-2012 school year, and most of the kids surveyed have mixed emotions about heading back to school.

“I’m happy to see my friends, but the summer could be a little bit longer,” Alden Freddo said. The 14 year-old will be entering 8th grade at the end of the month, a member of Mr. Sweeney’s group.

Alex McNeil was hanging at the beach on Thursday and was adamant that summer is way too short.

“I’m going to miss the beach and being outside, I’m kinda nervous about going into fifth grade, but I think my mom’s happy that school’s starting,” McNeil said at while working hard on a sand castle.

“I’m getting new clothes, which I like, but summer’s way too short,” 8-year-old Carie McCuish said from her home on Bates Road.

The school staff reports for duty on Aug, 29, the kids need to be at their desks the following day, Tuesday Aug. 30. The kids will be in class Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, off on Friday and Monday for the long Labor Day weekend.

“It’s my last year before I go to,” 13 year-old Jake Cooper said. “I did my summer reading and my reports so I think I’m ready to go back, I want to see my friends, but I wish summer was longer.”

It’s only going to be about 10 months before kids can crank up School’s Out on their iPods at the end of June 2012.

That loud sound you hear on Aug. 30 will be a collective sigh of relief from parents around town.
