Swampscott Student's Logo is Right Call for Basketball Referees

Here is one of five things to know about Swampscott today: Swampscott High junior Dan Woolhiser created the winning logo for 400 men and women on Board 130 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials.

1) Newsbit of the Day:

Board 130 of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (IAABO) conducted a logo contest in partnership with the fine arts department at Swampscott High School.

Board 130 is comprised of more than 400 men and women who officiate youth, high school and collegiate basketball throughout the region. There was a need to develop a logo for marketing, advertisement and potential merchandising purposes.

Teacher Anita Balliro coordinated student participation at Swampscott High. “The assignment was not an easy one for the group, as it contained many moving parts," she said.

Approximately 30 submissions were received by the Board 130 Executive Committee. The winning design, created by junior Dan Woolhiser, was selected via online balloting among the members.

Woolhiser is a talented artist who has taken art courses at such places as the Museum of Fine Arts and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, as well as Acorn Gallery in Marblehead. He is considering pursuing a career in industrial or interior design.

The story does not end there. Upon viewing Board 130's new logo, the Massachusetts state board — IAABO Board 15 — was so impressed that the secretary asked if Woolhiser would create an updated version of its existing logo.

Working on a tight deadline, Woolhiser created a sharp new look for the Massachusetts state board in time for it to be prominently displayed at the IAABO international convention in Myrtle Beach, S.C. April 25-28.

"We are very appreciative of Dan's efforts, professionalism, and talent," said Board 130 President Mark Shapiro, who recognized Woolhiser at Board 130's annual awards banquet. "We are also grateful to Anita Balliro and all the students who participated in the logo contest."
