The homeroom session will be followed by an all-school assembly welcoming returning students and newcomers.

Several days ago the enrollment was at 750 and growing, said school Principal Layne Millington.

That number includes 50 new students, new to the district, according to the Guidance Department.

All four grades will review basic expectations in the assembly including the expectation that they treat everyone in the building with respect and conduct themselves with dignity.

The students will also learn about a new student-run program designed by the Anti-Defamation League.

Thirty Swampscott High students will receive training on ways to lead a campaign against bigotry, stereotypes and bullying, the principal said.

They will get trained over several days in Vermont in October, he said.

Some Swampscott High teachers have already received training in the program and will advise students, as needed.

The idea is to develop student leaders who will create a positive climate for all students, the principal said.

Patch will report more information on the program as it becomes available.

Also at the assembly the school will recognize two students for their artistic achievement.

They are Taylor Irwin and Allie Richardson.

Originally they were to be recognized at a school awards ceremony last spring but, by mistake, they did not receive it.
