Snowy Winter Continues

Swampscott and the region weathers another storm.

The first week of February, like many weeks this winter, was dominated by weather events.

The weather included another barrage of snow that added insult to injury for the snow weary and covered any shadow-hunting groundhog in white.

The weather also led the superintendent to cancel classes on Wednesday.

This was the fifth cancelation in the 2010-11 school year.

Tuesday’s snow clogged and narrowed roads forcing drivers to improvise their movements.

For the rest of the week, many side streets were only wide enough for a single vehicle to pass. So motorists took turns giving ground, even backing up or nosing cars into driveways to let other vehicles pass.

Snow and ice covered catch basins and made walking difficult.

Great pools of water formed around drains until DPW crews uncovered them.

The week also included heavy rain, sleet, thunder and, on Sunday, a mild day.

The thaw felled impressive icicles, melted snow and made chopping driveway ice less of a chore — maybe even pleasurable for some choppers.

There’s still plenty of thawing needed to uncover lawns and fields but it was a start.
