SHS Gym/Field House Named For Richard 'Dick' Lynch

The dedication ceremony will take place at a Swampscott High basketball game.

School Committee members voted unanimously Tuesday to name the high school field house/gymnasium for former Swampscott High teacher and coach Richard "Dick" Lynch.

The dedication ceremony will take place at a Swampscott High basketball game. The date has yet to be selected.

The naming idea was brought forth by the Swampscott Hall of Fame Committee.

The Hall of Fame group has agreed to pay for signs or any other costs associated with the naming.

Several School Committee members including Ted Delano said they have heard only positive feedback from residents about the proposal since it was introduced two weeks ago.

Richard Lynch taught physical education for 19 years and coached football, basketball, baseball and track.

He is a member of the Massachusetts Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, the Swamspcott High School Athletic Hall of Fame, the Lynn English Athletic Hall of Fame, the Boston University Alumni Coach of the Year Awardand has won numerous coach of the year awards from the Lynn Item and Salem News.

He has lived in Swampscott since 1953 and attends many Swampscott football, basketball and baseball games.
