In preparation of a celebration of Centennial by the Sea, the “Hadley 100” organizing committee is looking for memorabilia such as old class photos or photos of the building, report cards, Hadley Heralds, yearbooks, pennants, sweatshirts, and pins.

Memorabilia items will be on view in a one-time exhibit as part of the a Community Open House at Hadley School on Saturday afternoon, April 28, to which Hadley alumni and former Hadley staff are invited. The event is free and open to the public. The open house hours are from 2 pm to 4:30 pm.

was built in 1911 and it opened for students in 1912 as the “New Grammar School”. It has served as Swampscott’s Junior High School for many years and is currently a K through 4th grade elementary school.

The school is named after Elizabeth Hadley, a teacher who taught in Swampscott for 37 years.

One of the highlights of the exhibit in April will be the “Hadley Cup”, a tall, beautiful sterling silver commemorative chalice which was presented to Mrs. Hadley in 1913 as a retirement gift and in recognition of her longstanding service to Swampscott’s schools.

The exhibit will also include an original printed program for the “Order of Exercises of the Laying of the Corner-Stone” in December of 1911 which has been made available through the Swampscott Historical Society.

“The program mentions the placing of a time capsule in the corner-stone and we know it’s not there anymore”, explains Molly Conner, president of the Swampscott Historical Society. “While we have not been able to track its contents down yet, we still have a few leads we are following up on.”

Should the time capsule be found within the next few weeks, it will be revealed during the Open House event on April 28th.

Following the Open House at Hadley School in the afternoon, the Hadley PTA is inviting the Hadley community to an evening auction gala at the Blythswood Mansion in Swampscott. The Hadley PTA is still accepting donations of products and services to add to their auction offerings.

This is a great opportunity for Hadley alumni give back to their school. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Hadley PTA and provide funding for invaluable enrichment programs at Hadley School.

About Hadley 100
The “Hadley 100” organization committee has been formed in 2010 by parents of Hadley students to help plan the commemoration of the centennial of one of the oldest Swampscott schools. It is supported by the Hadley PTA. The first commemorative event took place in February 2011 as a school-wide assembly for all current Hadley students and included a portrayal of Elizabeth Hadley by a professional historical impersonator. The April 2012 celebration day is open to the community and intended to be a reunion opportunity for former Hadley students and staff.
