School Officials Applaud Academic Achievement

Nicholas Hartmann, Lindsey Marini, and Philip Smith are all Commended Students, recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

School officials recognized the academic achievements of several students at Wednesday's School Committee meeting.

Nicholas Hartmann, Lindsey Marini, and Philip Smith for being named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. 

Each student received a Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

They also got standing applause from the packed room on the second floor at the high school.

The students introduced their parents to the gathering.

The three Swampscott High students are among 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. 

Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®)., according to the National Merit program

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” a Merit Scholarship spokesman said in a prepared statement.

“These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. 

"We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
