School Committee Meets Deadline For Student Trip

The committee took the unusual step of meeting on Saturday morning to OK a student field trip.

The School Committee met Saturday morning for a session that was an emergency in name only.

The panel gathered for 5 minutes at Panera Bread in Vinnin Square to approve an overnight field trip to the Berkshires for high school students.

Field trips must be approved by the committee.

Their preparation will ready them for a much more ambitious trip — to Morocco next summer.

In the North African country they will trek mountain and desert terrain on a World Challenge trek.

World Challenge expeditions are student organized.

Students choose the destination, arrange their travel and itinerary, and raise funds for the trip, Swampscott High School math teacher Chris Ratley said earlier. Ratley accompanied the students on their last trip.

In 2010, from June 26 until July 26, eight Swampscott High and seven Nipmuc Regional High students traveled to Madagascar on a World Challenge trip.

The students volunteered in villages, met students and walked in natural places. They saw lemurs as well as plants and animals unique to Madagascar.

In 2008, World Challenge travelers from Swampscott High School visited Argentina.
