School Bus Contract Postponed

The proposal is expected to return to the School Committee at their next meeting.

The School Committee last week postponed a vote to extend the district's  bus transportation contract with North Reading Transportation.

It now looks like the contract will return to the committee for action at its next meeting.

On June 6, committee member Marianne Hartmann said the bus company had left students stranded after sports events. She said she found that situation frustrating and wanted to ask the athletic department how serious the problem is and if it has been resolved.

In an interview Monday the committee member said district Business Manager Ed Cronin talked to Athletic Director Jonathan Flanagan.

He said there were problems in the fall but they were resolved thereafter, Hartmann learned.

At the last meeting, Cronin defended North Reading as having done "an exemplary job" for the district.

The proposed contract would increase the fees for most trips by $20 per trip. That increase is caused by the rising price of fuel, Cronin said.

"If we went out to bid on this contract, it would be at least at this level or higher," he said.
