Updated: Revote Needed to Make Superintendent Appointment Official

Swampscott School Committe Chairman Rick Kraft announced Wednesday that the committee's appointment of Pam Angelakis at their meeting Tuesday was not in keeping with the state's open meeting law.

To comply with state meeting rules the committee must post notice of the vote in advance. Since the school panel had not intended on voting Tuesday, it did not post notice of a vote before their meeting, the chairman said.

But the committee will post notice in advance of its next meeting, Dec. 10, where it will again vote on appointing Assistant Superintendent Angelakis as the next superintendent. This time for keeps.

On Tuesday night committee members' discussion and clear-cut consensus led them to taking action on the appointment.

The committee voted 5-0 to appoint Angelakis superintendent effective Feb. 1 or as needed.

The superintendent-to-be will be at the next School Committee meeting, Dec. 10, and is honored and excitd by the chance to work for the sitruct as superintendent.

"I am honored by the School Committee’s appointment to Superintendent last evening.  I am excited by the opportunity to serve our students and community in this greater capacity and humbled that the School Committee is giving me the ultimate responsibility to educate the students and continue to support the staff in our schools. Dr. Murphy and I have worked hard to move this district forward in the last six months, with the recognition we have much more work to do to reach our goals; goals that will be articulated to the community over the next few months as I develop my entry plan."
