Let's Hear It For Hadley

Hadley Elementary School second-graders raised more than $1,000 to add some normalcy to the lives of homeless children.

This week's Whiz Kid award goes to second-graders at .

Mr. Citino's class forged stronger ties among themselves by strengthening the lives of young people in need — homeless children.

While they were at it, the Hadley children generated school pride. They also received some well earned recognition from the school principal.

This class is a “looping” class.  As you are well aware, looping is an educational philosophy that encourages and fosters a sense of belonging to a classroom family.

In an effort to support this philosophy we’ve had the children and parents of Mr. Citino’s class join together many times already in events that take place outside of the classroom.

This time we asked the children and their families to give back!

On Saturday, March 19th everyone got together for a charity dance-a-thon at

The charity we chose was Birthday Wishes, an organization whose mission is simple ~ bring birthday parties to homeless children.

Birthday Wishes recognizes the importance of a birthday in a child's life and believes that the gift of a birthday celebration provides normalcy, joy and hope in these children's otherwise unsettled lives.

We felt that a 2nd grade class of 7- and 8-year-olds could very clearly understand this.  And boy did they!

Through the generosity of many, and the efforts of the entire class (and parents who baked), we are proud to tell you that the class has raised $1,047.00 for Birthday Wishes.

Saying thank you is often very hard for people but we want to make sure everyone knows how thankful we are to the following people: Mr. Citino for putting up with all of the children on a daily basis and instilling a sense of family, a passion for learning and a safe and loving environment for each one of them.

Lisa Faia for being our “DJ” and dance leader as well as providing us with the dance studio at All About Dance, free of charge, so all of the money the children raised could go directly to Birthday Wishes!

All of the parents that baked for our bake sale….we raised $30 for Birthday Wishes at 25¢ a bite!

And lastly, to all of the children who danced and collected money from friends and family….the money they raised will go to a great cause and what they did really does make a difference!

So, we are proud to be a part of this class.
