Incumbent Drops Out of School Committee Race

The chairman said he took a hard look at the committee's and his job's demands and his family's needs and reconsidered his decision to run for re-election.

As of now it appears only two people have their eyes on serving on the Swampscott School Committee.

Chiarman Larry Beaupre said in an email last night that he has reconsidered and will not run for re-election.

"On January 9, I announced that I intended to seek another term on the Swampscott School Committee," he said.  "Since then, I have had to take a hard look at the demands of my job, the needs of my family and demands involved in serving as Chair for the past year.  As a result, I have decided not to seek another term at this time."

The chairman went on to say, "It has been an honor and a privilege to have served on the Committee and to have worked with the talented and dedicated teachers and administrators that make Swampscott such an exceptional school district."

We will update this story as further information becomes available.

Two people who have pulled nomination papers for the two three-year School Committee seats and remain in the race are incumbent Jaren Landen and Amy O'Connor.

Larry Beaupre has been an eloquent advocate for Swampscott students, teachers and administrators in his many roles on the School Committee, and the district is better for his efforts. As a member of the contract negotiations subcommittee, Larry showed extraordinary respect for all parties and points of view in what can often be a polarizing environment. He also invested heavily of his time and effort in addressing the infrastructure needs of the town by advocating for the new school building. Throughout his tenure, Larry openly acknowledged the weaknesses in the system and worked to see that those areas were addressed. He also acknowledged the unpublicized strengths of the system and the people who work so hard to give our students the opportunities to thrive. His departure is our loss but his time on the committee will pay off for a long time to come. Maureen Thomsen

I would like to second the sentiments above, and thank Larry Beaupre for his tireless efforts, vision and commitment to excellence for Swampscott schools. Our children are better for it.
