The MIAA All-State Track and Field Championships, held on Sunday, featured the best athletes from around the state of Massachusetts, all of whom earned the right to compete by performing highly in the State Divisional Meets last weekend.
Peter Hale competed in the two mile against other qualifiers from Divisions I, II, III, and IV, toeing the line against other divisional champions and qualifiers.
Runners from all divisions were lumped into one race, creating an exciting atmosphere with an uncertain outcome. Would the race go out fast, with a blistering pace early on? Would it be a kicker's race, with the field waiting for someone to pounce?
The race did not disappoint, and after sixteen laps of racing Hale found himself crossing the finish line in podium position, beating many athletes who have beaten him before.
Hale ran a smart race, letting others lead the pack by tucking into the top half of the field, running consistent splits each lap early on. After going through the mile in 4:45, Hale continued to stay in the pack before surging over the last three laps to pull away from his competitors.
With a blistering last lap that almost caught the second place finisher, Hale moved up to third place in the state of Massachusetts. Hale negative split his second mile, running approximately a 4:43 second mile. Cross-country All-State champion and national qualifier John Green of St. John's Shrewsbury won the race in 9:21.68.
Hale's time is a new personal best by eleven seconds.
With his third place finish, Hale earned the opportunity to represent Swampscott High School and Massachusetts at the New England Interscholastic Boys & Girls Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The meet will be held on Friday, March 2nd at the Reggie Lewis Center in Roxbury, Massachusetts, beginning at 5PM.
The last New England track and field qualifier for the Big Blue was Jermaine Kelley, who qualified for the Outdoor Championships last spring.
