SCRAPBOOK SLIDE: Hadley Hits the Big 100

Swampscott sings, dances and cheers for Good Ol' Hadley.

Elizabeth Hadley stepped out of time to celebrate her namesake's 100th birthday on Friday.

Today's students sang Happy Birthday to Hadley, the school — their school.

At different times the Hadley has been an elementary school, a junior high and high school.

Many of Swampcott's residents have walked through her doors and in her hallways. Some have stood in her corners.

A few of them came back to join Friday's party, though none of these students were corner dwellers.

And a party it was. Elizabeth Hadley, who taught 37 years in Swampscott schools, reacted to the changing fashions and manners. She was very disappointed to find out that teachers were flouting convention by staying out after 8 p.m, and frequenting ice cream shops.

Music teacher Phyllis Gottlib led the students in song through a songbook of uplifting American tunes including Yankee Doodle Dandy, On the Sunny Side of the Street, We're Off to See the Wizard and one by the Black Eyed Peas, Tonight's Going to be a Good Night.

Students sang and a few of them danced Hip-hop.

Everyone ate cake.

Even Elizabeth.

Though she ate it in a very proper manner.
