Gelfand Goes Five With STEM Funds

District benefactor Mark Gelfand has extended funding for the district's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math program for a fifth year.

2) Newsbit of the Day: 

District benefactor Mark Gelfand extended his four-year, $1 million Science, Technology, Engineering and Math grant to a fifth year, dedicating an additional $232,000 to the program, said Superintendent of Schools Lynne Celli.

The districts is in its second of the five years. The STEM program's hands-on approach has generated participation on the robotics team, in science fairs and has set in motion plans for a bio-engineering club.

School Committee Chairman Larry Beaupre said STEM has the added benefit of stirring excitement and the spirit of scientific discovery among elementary students.

3) Swampscott Scholars: 

Nathaniel James Hyman was named to the Dean's List for the fall 2012 semester at Washington University in St. Louis. Hyman is enrolled in the university's College of Arts & Sciences.

To qualify for the Dean's List in the College of Arts & Sciences, students must earn a semester grade point average of 3.6 or above and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.
