Excellent Day Fore Golf at the Middle School

Golf pro and Swampscott native Ty Anderson was at the Swampscott Middle School Wednesday dispensing golf tips and lessons to students as part of the physical education curriculum.

“Building Swings 4 A Life Time,” that’s what it says on PGA golf pro Ty Anderson’s business card. Anderson, a Swampscott native, and hockey star who graduated from Swampscott High School in 1963, is spending time at the middle school this week, teaching students the finer points of golf during gym class.

“Golf is one of those lifetime sports,” PE teacher Todd Brown said Wednesday afternoon. “You can learn golf and love golf for a lifetime, and Ty’s a great guy to show the kids how to begin.”

Brown worked in conjunction with Jay Knowles, the JV golf coach, to get the program started. Anderson started lessons at Hadley School, and has been working his way through all the schools in town. Knowles teaches PE at Hadley School.

During the winter months Anderson teaches in Alabama and spends many hours in the summer at Dilisio Brothers Golf Range at 115 Swampscott Road, teaching the finer points of the game of golf to people of all ages.

“I’ve given lessons to over 160 thousand kids over the last ten years,” Anderson said. “Unfortunately, you can’t play football when you’re 60, but you can get out on the golf course and have a lot of fun at any age.”

Brown has been an educator for 19 years, the last 16 in Swampscott, and said the plan is to implement golf instruction permanently at the middle school.

“Jay and I are both avid golfers, and we want to share our love of the sport with the kids,” Brown said.

Sixth grader Andrew Dove recently won a golf membership to the Gannon Country Club through the middle school, and Brown hopes more Swampscott kids will be able to take advantage of the memberships at Gannon in the future.

People interested in learning from Anderson can reach him through his website, www.TyPgaPro.com.

“We hope this program is a big success, exposing kids to the game, and working as a feeder program for the high school golf team,” Brown said.
