School Building Committee Update

To Town Meeting members and residents:

After much discussion and consideration the School Building Committee (SBC) voted at its March 18th meeting to postpone the town-wide vote on a new district-wide Elementary School until the fall.

“We have spoken to many people in town over the past weeks, both at our recent public forum and one-on-one,” said SBC Chairman Joe Crimmins.  “It is clear to us that many people want more information and additional time to consider this very important proposal.  We intend to use the extra time to make sure these details are fully addressed.”

For example, in response to questions regarding traffic and parking at the new school the SBC has commissioned an additional comprehensive traffic study.

Under the proposal, a new elementary school for all students in grades 1-4 would be built adjacent to the existing Middle School.  The current Clarke School would serve as an early childhood education center for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students.

The SBC intends to schedule additional public forums to continue to address resident questions and gather feedback.  We will announce the date of the next forum shortly.  In the meantime, please feel free to contact any member of the SBC or email, swampscottesproject@swampscott.k12.ma.us.  Updated information about the project may be found at the school district website, www.swampscott.k12.ma.us
