Town Will Open Voluntary Shelter Sunday at High School

The shelter will open at 8:30 am for anyone who feels they need it. Pets will be accepted. See conditions below.

This information comes from Swampscott Town Administrator Andrew Maylor.

Hello this is Town Administrator Andrew Maylor with a message from Emergency Management Director James Potts. The National Weather Service expects the center of Hurricane Irene will pass through west/central Massachusetts on Sunday. As a result Swampscott residents should expect 2 to 4 inches of rain beginning late Saturday evening and lasting approximately 24 hours. This is enough rain to cause street flooding in low lying areas. Although the storm surge is not expected to result in coastal flooding, the wind associated with this storm will reach sustainable speeds of 35 to 70 MPH beginning Sunday morning and lasting until late Sunday evening. Winds gusts in excess of 70 MPH are likely. This combination of wind and rain make it likely that there will be downed limbs and trees and power outages. In light of these expectations the Town of Swampscott will be opening a voluntary evacuation center at Swampscott High School located at 200 Essex Street. This shelter will open at 8:30AM on Sunday August 28th and remain open as long as deemed necessary. Those residents choosing to use the shelter may bring their pets provided they bring a crate to house them in, a leash, current rabies certificate or tag and food. Pets will be housed in their crate an enclosed in the loading dock area with access to the Cafeteria. Anyone needing transportation to the shelter should contact the Swampscott Police Department at 781-595-1111. Also, all Town beaches will be closed starting at 6PM Saturday, August 27th and will remain closed until at least Monday August 29th. Please prepare for power outages by making sure that you have working flashlights, a battery powered radio and other emergency provisions.
