The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Swampscott today as a series of powerful thunderstorms are expected to roll across the North Shore.

Swampscott Director ofGino Cresta said the department has blocked off the flood prone section of Burrill Street by Railroad Avenue and crews are cleaning out storm drains.

The bulk of the storms are expected to pass through town this morning, according to reports the director has received.

The weather alert, last updated at 4:30 a.m., pertains to much of New England, and will last through the end of the night tonight as remnants of Hurricane Isaac pass through the region.

According to the National Weather Service, a weak cold front will sweep across New England today, acting as a focus for rain with embedded heavy downpours and isolated thunderstorms.

Rainfall rates could reach an inch-per-hour in some locations and heavy downpours may lead to localized urban flooding.
