State Democratic Commitee Elects Sen. McGee Chairman

The leadership position comes at a pivotal time, the chairman said.

The Massachusetts Democratic State Committee unanimously elected state Senator Thomas McGee its new chairman to replace John Walsh, who is stepping down after six years in the post.

The vote was unanimous and came at the committee's meeting Thursday at Kennedy Middle School in Waltham.

After the vote, McGee said this is a historic time for the party.

"In the past few elections cycles, our grassroots, values-based campaigning led to unprecedented voter turnout resulting in winning both U.S. Senate seats, all nine Congressional seats, all Constitutional offices and solidifying our overwhelmingly Democratic Massachusetts House and Senate," McGee said. "I look forward to continuing this positive trend over the next election cycle and beyond."

"As Democrats, we're witnessing a national Republican Party attempt to turn back the clock on our core values for which we battled over generations: Affordable health care, Social Security, Medicare, women's rights, civil rights, LGBT rights, and organized labor,” said McGee. “So when John Walsh announced he was stepping down as chair of the Massachusetts Democratic State Party, I decided to do my part to preserve and protect the basic principles that binds us together as Democrats.”
Sen. McGee has represented the Third Essex District since 2002, which includes Lynn, Lynnfield, Marblehead, Nahant, Saugus, and Swampscott. He is the Senate Chairman of the Transportation Committee and a member of the Ways and Means Committee. He is the former Chairman of the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development and the Joint Committee on Veterans and Federal Affairs.

Before his election to the State Senate, he served four terms in the Massachusetts House of Representatives representing West Lynn and Nahant. McGee has been a member of the Democratic State Committee for over 30 years and has been a delegate to several state and national Democratic Conventions.
