Selectmen to Discuss Marijuana Dispensary on Burrill

Selectmen meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

The owner of 205 Burrill Street is interested in opening a medical marijuana dispensary at the location.

But before applying to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health for a dispensary at the Burrill location, the owner, Julius Sokol, would need a letter of support, or at least a letter of non-opposition, from the town of Swampscott.

On Wednesday selectmen are scheduled to discuss the medical marijuana dispensary idea, according to the agenda.

The Board meets at 7 p.m. at Town Hall.

205 Burrill Street is vacant. A liquor store was planned for the space, located by the Swampscott Train Station.

In 2012 voters in Massachusetts overwhelmingly approved the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes.

The voting on Question 3 in Swampscot was: 

Yes 5,328 No 2,555

The law allows up to 35 nonprofit dispensaries in the state, the town administrator said.

There must be at least one in each county, he said.

In 2012 Massachusetts became the 18th state to legalize medical marijuana. Patients with HIV, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis C, or other conditions can obtain a card from the state allowing them to purchase the drug.
